Module 8 - Reflection on Reading and Viewing

The reading this week was interesting to me for the reason that I did not realize how much digital was involved in Hollywood productions. It is in basically every movie now and days. Whether you are watching a science-fiction movie or an every day real life movie there is some sort of digital technology. With digital technology anything is possible with the right people and enough money. There are so many different techniques that are used and when you combine those you end up with a vision that is second to none.

I have always loved the Star Wars episodes ever since I was a little kid. I might be a little out of line but when watching Attack of the Clones I still think that the special effects that Lucas used more than 20 years ago was better than what was used in the new Star Wars. Sometimes I believe that movies now and days depend too much on technology and step away from the story being told. Other than that the movie was very good and I do enjoy seeing how Anikin Skywalker became Darth Vader.

Robb, I experienced the same amazement as you did about how digital technology is commonplace in today’s films, even when “special” effects are not obvious (such as editing techniques in documentaries). When reading the text, I also caught on to the truth of James Cameron’s statement that “anything is possible right now if you can throw enough money at it, or enough time” (p. 210).

I do not know your age, but I suspect you may be part of the generation that grew up on Star Wars. My generation grew up on the Star Trek television series. The technology then was extremely crude in comparison to that of Star Wars, but to me, it was the greatest thing since sliced bread (and yes, sliced bread had been invented before I was born, LOL). I agree that effects are the dominating factors in a lot of movies, and although I prefer movies that concentrate on the story, it is a lot of fun to see a “special effects” film every now and then just to see what is new in the world of digital technology.

Thank you for sharing your post - I always enjoy reading what you have to say.

I find it interesting that you like special effects from twenty years ago. However I do agree that many films tend to over use special effects and it is a distraction from the story line.
